Levothroid (Levothyroxine) is a levorotatory isomer of thyroxine, after partial metabolism in the liver and kidneys it affects the development and growth of tissues, metabolism. In small doses, it has an anabolic effect. In medium doses, it stimulates growth and development, increases the oxygen demand of tissues, stimulates the metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, and increases the functional activity of the cardiovascular and central nervous systems.
Indication for use
Levothroid (Levothyroxine) can be taken by almost all adults for:
• Treatment of benign thyroid diseases.
• Prevention of relapse after surgical treatment of euthyroid goiter.
• As a replacement therapy for hypothyroidism.
• Suppressive therapy for thyroid cancer.
• As an adjuvant during antithyroid therapy for hyperthyroidism.
• As a diagnostic tool for the thyroid suppression test.
Precautions
Levothroid (Levothyroxine) is not recommended to use if you have Increased individual sensitivity to any component of the drug, adrenal insufficiency, pituitary insufficiency, untreated thyrotoxicosis, acute myocardial infarction, acute myocarditis, acute pancarditis, complex therapy with thyrostatics during pregnancy. In case of pregnancy and period of lactation the treatment can be continued.
Dose and usage
Levothroid (Levothyroxine) is released in form of 25mg – orange, caplet-shaped tablet; 50mg– white, caplet-shaped tablet; 75mg– violet, caplet-shaped tablet; 88mg – mint, caplet-shaped tablet; 100mg– yellow, caplet-shaped tablet; 112mg– rose, caplet-shaped tablet; 125mg – brown, caplet-shaped tablet; 137mg– deep blue, caplet-shaped tablet; 150mg– blue, caplet-shaped tablet; 175mg– lilac, caplet-shaped tablet; 200mg– pink, caplet-shaped tablet; 300mg– green, caplet-shaped tablet.
The tablet is taken orally once daily before breakfast. The daily dose depends on your weight, age and the aim of treatment.
The average daily dose is approximately 1,7mcg / kg / day (e.g. 100 mg for 60kg person).
Side effects
Side effects are not observed when taking Levothroid (Levothyroxine) at the recommended doses. When prescribing high doses, tachycardia, arrhythmia, angina attacks, tremor, sleep disorders, anxiety, hyperhidrosis, weight loss may occur. In some cases, temporary weight gain and hair loss may also occur.
