General description:
Benicar
(Olmesartan) is a drug used to treat hypertension in adults and children over 6
years old, thus preventing problems like strokes, heart attacks and kidney
diseases from occurring. Benicar is
classified as ARB (angiotensin receptor blocker). It works by loosening and
relaxing blood vessels so that blood flows easier.
The drug has
three strengths:
● 5mg, supplied as yellow, round,
non-scored, film-coated tablets, debossed with C12
● 20mg, supplied as white, round,
non-scored, film-coated tables, debossed with C14
● 40mg, supplied as white, oval-shaped,
non-scored, film-coated tablets, debossed wit C15
The drug
should be stored at 20-25°C
Directions for use:
Dosages may
differ depending on the patient’s condition; consult your doctor for more
information.
If dealing
with adult hypertension, the recommended dose is 20mg once daily, with no
regards to food. The drug is administered orally. It is advised to take the
drug at the same time daily.
Pediatric
hypertension (6-16 years of age) is treated with 10mg dose daily for children
who weigh less than 35kgs, 20mg for children weighing more than 35kgs.
Side effects:
● Lightheadedness/dizziness
● Fainting
● Muscle weakness
● Diarrhea
● Chest pain
● Nausea
● Hyperlipemia
● Arthritis
It is very
rare to experience a serious allergic reaction to this drug. However, contact
you doctor straight away if you notice any allergic symptoms like rash, trouble
breathing, severe dizziness, itching.
Precautions:
● Before taking the drug, tell you
doctor if you have had any problems with liver or kidneys or have experienced
dehydration
● DO NOT do
anything that requires alertness and clear vision while taking the drug
● DO NOT take
the drug if you are pregnant and DO NOT
breastfeed
● You may have low blood pressure while
taking the drug
● Blood pressure needs to be checked
often
● If you have diabetes, DO NOT take this medication with other
drugs containing aliskiren
