Asacol (Mesalazine)
Asacol exists in two forms: tablets and as rectal suppositories. The pills of Asacol come in round or elongated shapes of white, yellow or deep-orange colors depending on the dosage and the manufacturer. The rectal suppositories of Asacol come in elongated shapes of white color. The usual dosage for one tablet, which contains mesalazine, is 400 or 800 mg. The usual dosage for one rectal suppository is 500 mg. The medicine belongs to the group of antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory means. The active component is mesalazine.
Pharmacological use
Asacol is an anti-inflammatory drug with a predominant localization of action in the intestine. Mesalazine inhibits the activity of neutrophilic lipoxygenase and the synthesis of arachidonic acid metabolites, which are mediators of inflammation. It inhibits migration, degranulation, neutrophil phagocytosis, as well as the secretion of immunoglobulins by lymphocytes. Mesalazine has antioxidant properties, binding to free oxygen radicals. Asacol has proven in the treatment of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
